General Motors' Chevrolet brand swept the top prize in both the car and truck categories Monday at the start of the annual North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

The Chevrolet Silverado, a full-size pickup truck revealed at last year's NAIAS, won the North American Truck/Utility of the Year, while the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray won the North American Car of the Year after only one year in production.

This year's list of finalists also included the Cadillac CTS and Mazda3 on the car side and Acura MDX and Jeep Cherokee on the truck/utility side.

The awards, first given in 1994, are voted on an independent jury of automotive journalists of broadcast, Internet and print. The cars must be for sale in North America.

The awards always kick off the press preview days for the annual auto show in Detroit, the traditional center of the U.S. car industry. The international exhibition will open to the public Saturday through Jan. 26.
