Jumping off a shortened run-up, world record holder Renaud Lavillenie of France still claimed the title of men's pole vault event as he cleared 5.92m in the 2014 Diamond League Shanghai meet here on Sunday.

Lavillenie decided to compete in Shanghai with a 16 strides run-up, instead of 20-stride he is used to, because he believed it was still too early in the season and jumping off a shortened run-up can help him to be better prepared for the other competitions to come.

Start off from 5.52m, the 27-year-old Frenchman seemed a little sloppy as he needed two attempts to clear both 5.52 and 5.72. But after jumping past 5.72, Lavillenie already clinched his title as no one else, including the reigning world champion Raphael Holzdeppe, managed to clear that height.

The London Olympic gold medallist then leaped past 5.82 and 5.92 both with his first try before failing all three attempts at 6.03.

"I come here for the four points and I got them," said Lavillenie. "Of course I want to win the 5th time of the Diamond League, as well as the European Championships. I want to keep the same dynamic as tonight even if I was not at my 100% effort."

The winning mark of 5.92m is not only the world leading result for 2014 but also the new meet record that added 0.22m to the former one set by German vaulter Malte Mohr in 2010.

Konstantinos Filippidis of Greece equalled his season best to grab the silver at 5.62. China's world championship finalist Xue Changrui also cleared 5.62 but had to settle with the bronze after the count-back.

Lavillenie plans to be back on his full approach for his next IAAF Diamond League outing, in the US city of Eugene on 31 May.
