Bulgarian shooters aim for 1 medal at London Olympics
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-16 14:31

Bulgarian shooting team wants to at least qualify for two finals and win one medal in London, its Olympics coordinator Dimitar Todorov said.

"We will compete with dignity at London Olympics, if we participate in at least two finals and win there at least one medal, no matter who will do it," Todorov said in a recent interview with Xinhua.

Up to now, Bulgarian shooters have earned four gold, six silver and six bronze medals at the previous Olympic Games.

Four Bulgarian shooters including Mariya Grozdeva, Antoaneta Boneva, Petya Lukanova and Anton Rizov have qualified for London.

The last three athletes will compete at the Olympic Games for the first time, while Grozdeva, 40, will strive to add more awards to her two gold and three bronze medals won at five Olympiads so far.

Besides, Bulgaria has also applied for an Olympic wild card for Tanyu Kiryakov, 49, who has been injured, operated, unable to fully prepare and participate in all qualifications for London, Todorov said.

"We hope that Kiryakov, who was a double Olympic champion, would change the nature of London Olympics," Todorov said.

"Entering the final, where eight competitors are involved, is always the reasonable goal for every shooter, because the final is another type of competition, with limited time, the voltage is higher, the situation is different, so anything can happen in the final," Todorov said.

Olympics is a very specific event, where stress is huge, added Todorov, who has also been a psychologist of the Bulgaria's shooters since 1982 and prepared the team for six Olympiads so far.

"It is therefore very important in all sports how the athletes will preserve themselves purely psychological, to show what they can, because, especially in our sport, especially in some disciplines such as women's rifle, the levels of the first 20 or 30 shooters are extremely aligned," Todorov said.

He is sure that now in this discipline at least 30 players in the world can shoot from 398 to 400 points, which is the maximum.

"Here the differences are extremely small, so it is very important also to have a day, to have luck," Todorov said.
