China's teenage sensation Yan Han became the first ever Chinese male skater to win an ISU Grand Prix title at Cup of China on Saturday.

The 17-year-old made a bit of smart changes to his elements following a two-footed landing on his opening triple axel and a fall on his late triple lutz, which resulted in a fairly high 155.48-point free skate of Yan and a title winning total score of 245.62 for a surprising gold medal in China's drought field of figure skating at the 2013 Cup of China.

China's previous impressive GP results were recorded by now-retired Li Chengjiang at the 2004 Cup of China and Song Nan in France two years ago, both as runners-up.

Li's best result came in 2001 as he claimed the champion at the Four Continents tournament.

"It could be an even more difficult routine but I managed to level it down with the help of my coach Jia Shuguang, since I felt overwhelmed with it," Yan explained on his free skate.

With only one spot of the men's singles booked at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Yan and Song's chances are still on hang.

"Winning a GP is definitely a boost for me when heading to the Sochi 2014, mostly mentally," Yan said.

"Song is a arch-rival with great ability. Competing against him while vying for a berth to Sochi, I dare not to imagine much about going to the Winter Olympics. But I feel much better now," he added.

Leading into Saturday's free skate, Yan, who just slid onto the international senior stage with this GP at home, completed a perfect quad jump and followed up with triple toe loop spontaneously to make up for his error on the opening triple-triple.

He edged Maxim Kovtun to the second place though the Russian finished his free skate with a leading 156.81, while Japan's Takahiko Kozuka, who was the runner-up in the 2011 world championship, settled for the bronze medal with a distant 226.92 total score.

Denis Ten, the pre-tournament favorite from Kazakhstan who grabbed a silver at the 2013 worlds, finished fourth on 224.80, although the 20-year-old improved to the third in men's free skate classifications.

The other two Chinese skaters Song Nan and Wang Yi ended in bottom two with 196.80 and 185.22 respectively.
