Slovenian rider Primoz Roglic of Adria Mobil won the second stage of the 2014 Tour of Azerbaijan after a long break on Thursday.
He outsprinted his break companion Will Clarke for the victory. Will Clarke of Australia came second, while Brazilian Rafael Andriato ranked third.
The second stage of the race was 187 km from Baku to Ismayilli region, and included three ranked climbs.
It was a hard mountain stage, with heavy winds in the first part tearing the peloton into multiple groups. The climbs included steep ascents, tight curves and sometimes narrow roads. The field had broken into three groups by the time the action started.
Roglic was the first to go, with Clarke giving chase. The two then took the remaining mountains and intermediate sprint, working well together. They managed to hang on to their narrow margin until the end in Ismayilli, after 187 difficult kilometers.
The race consists of 5 stages and involves some 150 riders from 33 countries and regions.
The race will pass 7 Azerbaijani regions and end up in the capital on May 11.
