A supporter of Napoli who had been shot allegedly by a Roma fan before the Italian Cup final last month died from the attack's injuries, local reports said on Wednesday.

Ciro Esposito, 28, died early in the day after his conditions were reported to have seriously worsened in the Rome's hospital where he had been in intensive care after been shot on May 3.

The young man died for "multi-organ failure unresponsive to medical therapies and life support," doctors said. He had undergone several delicate surgeries over the past weeks.

Roma supporter Daniele De Santis, 48, was currently in jail and faced homicide charges for allegedly having shot Esposito in Rome while he was en-route to watch the final in which Napoli eventually beat Fiorentina 3-1.

According to investigators, De Santis along with other Roma hooligans launched an attack by firing flares and fireworks at a stadium-bound bus full of Napoli supporters, and finally opened fire against them. Other three Napoli fans were wounded in the clashes.

"He shot me," Esposito was quoted as saying by his relatives when they showed him some newspaper pictures of De Santis in a moment of lucidity days after the attack.

Esposito "died in his attempt to save other people," his family said in a statement later on Wednesday. "He heard the screams of children who, together with their families, wanted to watch a football match, and intervened to help them .. We ask Italian institutions to seek justice," the statement added.

Following the announcement of Esposito's death, police in Rome were on high alert amid worries of revenge raids in the capital by angered Napoli fans, local reports said.

Esposito's relatives however made a plea for ending violence in the Italian football. "In the name of the whole family, I ask everyone to stop violence," his uncle was quoted as saying by local media.

Wednesday's death was only the latest episode in a history of violence that has heavily tarnished the reputation of Italian football.

Local authorities have repeatedly attempted to tackle the problem introducing tougher measures on stadium security but harsh fights between fans have continued to happen every week of the championship.

In 2007, another young supporter, 25-year-old Gabriele Sandri, was shot dead in error by a policeman amid clashes between Lazio and Juventus fans at a motorway service station in Tuscany.
