It is estimated that some 20,000 England fans visited Brazil over the course of the tournament of the World Cup in Brazil this year, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said on Monday.

Although the England football team was out before the eighth-final, the number of official tickets for British football fans were the fourth highest, following Brazil, the United States and Argentina.

"The vast majority of England fans were great ambassadors for the country and the number requiring assistance was low," said Alex Ellis, British ambassador to Brazil.

"The Be on the Ball campaign (a campaign offering advice on how to prepare for trips and to stay safe for British visitors heading to Brazil) helped fans prepare and we will look to do something similar for the Olympics," said the ambassador.

Statistic shows that 22 British people have been arrested during their travel in Brazil, and the majority of the 22 were for ticket touting, while 11 people were hospitalized for minor injuries.

According to reports, more than 20 million British viewers watched the Germany-Argentina final on Sunday evening.

BBC's coverage attracted an average viewers of 12.1 million and peaking with 16.7 million during the last five minutes in the match. ITV, another commercial public service TV network in Britain drew 2.9 million viewers, peaking at 3.9 million in the last 10 minutes.

Reports said the World Cup was the most-watched event since the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, which attracted more than 27 million audience.
