Indian army expedition team escapes avalanche in Nepal during quake

A 34-member Indian Army expedition team was among those who escaped from an avalanche triggered by the deadly quake and striking an mountain base camp, which killed 18 foreigners, said local media Sunday.

Another civilian expedition team of 11 mountaineers from the northeastern Indian state of Assam was also safe, said Times of India online.

The report quoted Indian Army sources in the Indian capital as saying their team assisted in evacuating 13 bodies of mountaineers who died in the avalanche. At least 18 people at the base camp had died in the avalanche, according to the Indian army information.

Army officials said information by Saturday evening was that all the dead were foreigners.

About 1,400 people were killed in a powerful earthquake that struck Nepal at midday on Saturday and the death toll is expected to rise as the resuce work is going on across the country.
