Infrastructure projects launched for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit would bring more opportunities to Russia's Far East Primorsky Territory, a local official said Thursday.

Transport, industrial, maintenance and other projects in the city of Vladivostok and the region, made it possible to receive 10 to 12 million tourists a year, Primorsky Governor Vladimir Miklushevsky said.

"We are planning to reach the level of 10 to 12 million tourists every year in the coming five to 10 years," Miklushevsky told reporters, adding this would be a "powerful multiplier for agriculture, transport and service industry."

In total, more than 600 billion rubles (18.7 billion U.S. dollars) were poured into various projects. More than 150 km of roads, several public utilities, a sports complex, and an opera and ballet theater had been built.

These facilities were built not only for the APEC summit but also for the development of Vladivostok and Primorsky Territory, Miklushevsky said.

All these efforts laid the ground for future investment and facilitated a transition to a service economy, he said.

Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov told reporters Thursday transport facilities in Vladivostok were "fully prepared" for the summit.

Recalling a visit to the city earlier this week, Sokolov said all the works would be completed by September. The facilities would not only be used for participants of the summit but also for local residents after the meeting, he said.
