"A Long Way Down", based on a novel by British author Nick Hornby, premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on Monday.

Movie stars Pierce Brosnan, Imogen Poots, Toni Collette and Aaron Paul play four people who meet by chance on New Year's Eve, and they've all come to the same rooftop to commit suicide.

Instead, they make a pact to try to keep each other alive.

Hornby, whose books "High Fidelity" and "About a Boy" have also been made into films, says it's always startling to see a project finally realized.

"There's so much work and so many years go by while you are working on this thing and suddenly you sit down in a dark room and it goes by in 90 minutes and it feels insane. You think, I couldn't understand that, I wonder if anybody will understand it?" Hornby said.

Irish actor Pierce Brosnan thanks Agent 007 for broadening his career horizons: "The opportunity of Bond was a great one. It's the gift that's keep giving. It allowed me to do many different movies and have a career internationally."

Aaron Paul, of "Breaking Bad" fame, says the project exceeded his expectations. "This whole experience, I know I can speak for everyone involved, was just a such a magical, beautiful time and I haven't quite experienced this sort of thing ever. It's just, I feel very blessed," he said.

"A Long Way Down" runs out of competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, which ends on Saturday.
