Shanghai has surpassed Tokyo and Hong Kong to become the top fashion capital in Asia, ranking 10th in the global list, according to a survey conducted by the US-based Global Language Monitor (GLM).

In Asia, Shanghai jumped to 10th in this year's ranking from 22nd last year, coming ahead of Tokyo's 12th and Hong Kong's 20th. Bangkok fell to 52nd from 29th last year.

Shanghai no doubt has high consumption power but its top ranking in Asia is chiefly because its residents have spent a lot on luxury goods, as reported by not a few media.

Shanghai and Hong Kong can be ranked among the top fashion capitals because they have a large fashion population, while Taipei is comparatively smaller, the survey said.

According to the GLM report, Shanghai has led fashion trends in Asia, with Singapore trailing behind Shanghai and Tokyo in recent years.

GLM also said Dubai is the fashion capital of the Middle East, while New Delhi is developing most quickly. Seoul ranked 55th in the GLM ranking.
