President Xi Jinping is expected to meet with his American counterpart Barack Obama on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) in The Hague next week. Xi will likely explain China's views on nuclear security and introduce the country's measures in safeguarding nuclear security.

Heads of 53 nations and leaders of multiple international organizations will attend the NSS, which aims to strengthen nuclear security and prevent nuclear terrorism.

Li Baodong, vice minister of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said that Xi and Obama will meet and exchange their opinions on the Sino-US relationship. Li has also urged Japan to clarify its storage of weapon-grade nuclear materials during the NSS.

It will be the first time President Xi attends the summit, and will mark another important diplomatic action taken by China to ensure international security, Li said. The Chinese leader is expected to talk about China's views on nuclear security and the country's achievements and measures in safeguarding nuclear security. After paying a state visit to the Netherlands, Xi will visit France and Germany, ending his tour in Belgium to visit the EU headquarters in Brussels.

Niu Jun, a professor at Peking University's School of International Studies, said China and the U.S. must work together on nuclear security and anti-terrorism, while finding ways to strengthen the existing consensus on radioactive contamination.

Meanwhile, tensions between Russia and the US remain heightened in the lead up to the summit due to Russia's involvement in Crimea, with Dmitry Kiselyov, a leading anchor on Russian state television, claiming Russia has the nuclear ability to turn the US into "radioactive ash."

Niu expects that Xi and Obama may also broach the subject of Russia-Ukraine tensions over Crimea during their meeting.
