Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-04 10:42

The U.S. manufacturing sector grew for the 29th consecutive month in December 2011, adding to a recent series of positive economic data, a leading industry survey showed on Tuesday.

The U.S. Institute of Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing index, also known as the purchasing managers index(PMI), stood at 53.9 percent in December, higher than the reading of 52.7 percent in November.

A reading above 50 percent indicates an expanding manufacturing sector.

Of the 18 U.S. manufacturing industries, nine reported growth last month, including apparel, computer and electronic products, petroleum and coal products, food, beverage and tobacco, said the ISM.

Nine industries reported contraction in December including plastics and rubber, chemical products and transportation equipment.
