Cheaper energy helped keep U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) flat in June, the Labor Department reported on Tuesday.
The CPI, which tracks inflation at the retail level, remained steady compared with the previous month, after a 0.3-percent decline in May.
The report said that energy prices dropped 1.4 percent in June. Gasoline prices declined 2 percent while food costs edged up 0.2 percent last month.
Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, the so-called "core" index edged up 0.2 percent in June.
Economists monitor core prices to get a sense of broader inflation trends, a key barometer for monetary policy decision. |
