Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Frans Timmermans returned to the Netherlands on Saturday night after his visit to Ukraine following the plane crash.

Timmermans left for Ukraine on Friday with a team, consisting of the National Forensic Investigation Team (LTFO), the Safety Board and a prosecutor. The identification experts urgently hoped they could start work in the area controlled by Russian separatists, where 298 people, including 193 Dutch citizens, died in the MH17 plane crash.

The minister wanted to ensure personally that the delegation in Ukraine would not be hindered and with the help of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) he made agreements on that matter.

"Given the uncertain security situation on the ground, it was necessary that agreements were made on the safety of the Dutch experts," said Timmermans in a statement. "We were able to arrange that."

Timmermans offered the International Red Cross (ICRC), which can play an important role in the recovery of the victims, help. The Dutch research team is now on its way to the crash site, about 800 kilometers from Kiev.

"The Netherlands mourns and wants our people to come home," Timmermans added. "The recovery of the bodies is at present our first priority and given the circumstances, a huge challenge. It is a complex operation that will take some time."

The minister spoke with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and with Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk who have pledged full cooperation to make the recovery of the victims possible.

"The situation remains unclear," Timmermans continued. "There remains a big difference between what the Russian separatists say and what they do. Until now, the access was too short to be able to operate effectively in the disaster area. It is terrible for the families that it takes so long."

A majority in the Dutch parliament wants to be briefed on the plane crash in Ukraine and the steps that the government has undertaken.

The parties want to hear the latest developments from Security and Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten and Timmermans in figuring out why it takes so long for the bodies to be taken back home.

The members of the parliament will therefore return earlier from their summer recess. The government has yet to formally respond to the request.
