Times Square crowd cheers Obama's re-election
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-11-07 16:07

Cheers, yelling and laughter overwhelmed Times Square here as supporters celebrated Barack Obama's re-election in the U.S. presidential race.

"I am ecstatic, I am happy, I am delighted," Jose Ramos, who is expecting his first baby in two and a half weeks, said in front of the jumbo screen showing the election outcome in the city's iconic public space. "I just called my wife at home in New Jersey, she is watching of course at home ... very ecstatic."

It was late night Tuesday in a cold New York City, but Ramos thought he should celebrate with the crowd before taking a bus back home.

"I think it should let Obama finish what he started, such as healthcare, tax and let him help more to fix the economy, which we need," Ramos said, showing his optimism for Obama's second term of presidency.

"Obama, four more years," a loud voice crossed the crowd, attracted attention and got whistles as response. It was James Lavala, 42, an African American musician.

His happiness was widely shared by the people around him. A Brazilian and a French citizen came to him and expressed their excitement.

Gattlin Miller, a university student said, "I finally got what I want. I am super exited."

Anton Tenazes, a software developer, described his feeling as relieved. "I just want him to stop pleasing the other side (Republicans) as he has done in the first term," he said. He hoped the man he also voted for four years ago could be more progressive in the next four years.

"I want to see more job growth. I'd like to see more with his Medicare," Phoebe Flynn, a performer from Denver, Colorado, said. She has also been a big fan of Obama since four years ago.

Michael Mejia, a young engineer, told Xinhua, when he saw the outcome, he and his roommates got goosebumps.

"I'm really happy. I've been stressed over the last several months, especially because I have been seeing so much going on where there is so many lies being told," he said.

"I voted for him in the last election as well. He is definitely going to do a better job than Mitt Romney would have. I think when he came into a tough situation, there were a lot of issues he had been taking care of, but there is still a lot left to do," he said.
