Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-13 17:02

Egypt started Monday the third and last phase of the construction of the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is expected to be open to visitors in 2015.

This phase consists of the construction of the museum's main building and its outbuildings, according to State Minister for Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim.

With an area of 117 feddans (about 490,000 square meters), the grand museum is next to the famous pyramids of the Giza plateau, some 20 km southwest of downtown Cairo.

Some 100,000 pieces of artwork will be displayed in the new building, among which are the most important Pharaonic monuments like the statue of Ramses II and a model of King Tutankhamen's tomb with all its treasures.

With an investment of about 600 million U.S. dollars, the construction of the Grand Egyptian Museum started in early 2005.
