Egypt's SCAF to deliver power by end of June
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-18 19:36

Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) said in a press conference Monday that they will deliver the power to the elected president by the end of June, official news agency MENA reported.

"We will deliver the power by the end of this month to the elected president in a great celebration which will be witnessed by the whole world," said Mohamed al-Assar, a member of the SCAF.

Al-Assar said the newly elected president will be granted complete authorities, and all the Egyptians will witness the moment of power delivering to the presidency winner, whose name will be announced by the Higher Presidential Election Commission on Thursday.

Meanwhile, another member Mamdouh Shahin who also chaired the conference, asserted that the new president has the power to appoint and sack the Cabinet, the deputies of the Prime Minister, and the Defense Minister.

Shahin said that the military forces won't be far from the political scene but they will not interfere with any authority, stressing that the SCAF announced from the very beginning they won 't take any President's powers.

He also commented on the Supreme Constitutional Court's decision of dissolving the Parliament by saying "the military forces weren't happy with such verdict, but we should respect it".

The SCAF issued a supplementary constitutional declaration on Sunday night to retake legislative powers after the parliament was dissolved several days ago.

The ruling military council took over power in February 2011, after Hosni Mubarak was forced to resign under pressure of 18 days of mass protests against his 29-year rule.
