Egyptian president to visit Saudi Arabia next week
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-08 00:13

Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi will pay a visit to Saudi Arabia on July 11, as his first visit abroad since becoming the country's first president after last year's unrest, official MENA news agency reported Saturday.

MENA quoted the kingdom's ambassador to Egypt, Ahmed al-Qattan, as saying that Morsi will meet Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz during the trip aiming at promoting the relationship between the two countries, and then make a short pilgrimage to Mecca, Islam's holy city.

After his meeting with Morsi on Saturday, Qattan said King Abdullah had presented Morsi an invitation to visit Saudi Arabia and the Egyptian president accepted it.

"Egyptian-Saudi relations cannot be confined in economic ties. They are more extensive than that," Qattan said, adding that the president's meeting with King Abdullah will focus on regional situation which concerns the two sides, and he believed that Saudi Arabia will increase its investment in Egypt in the next period.

The Egyptian-Saudi ties experienced their worst time in decades when Saudi Arabia announced on April 28 to recall its ambassador in Egypt and close its embassy in Cairo and consulates in the Egyptian cities of Alexandria and Suez over protests around the embassy. The protesters called for the release of Ahmed al-Gizawi, who was arrested by Saudi authorities at Jeddah airport over the allegation of possessing banned drugs.

After Egypt's swift efforts to resolve the crisis, Saudi King Abdullah ordered on May 4 to reopen the diplomatic mission in Egypt, and the Kingdom's ambassador Qattan returned to Cairo on May 5.
