FDR demands resignation of Mali's PM and his gov't
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-25 16:48

The United Front to Safeguard Democracy and the Republic (FDR, anti-coup d'etat) on Tuesday called for the resignation of Mali's transitional Prime Minister Cheick Modibo Diarra and his government to "facilitate consultations for appointment of a new prime minister (PM) and formation of a government of national unity."

In a press statement, a copy of which Xinhua obtained, FDR said that "over three months after the setting up of the government, it's easier to see that on each of the priority areas that it was formed to tackle, the government has not done anything."

According to the 2nd vice-chairman of FDR, Fatoumata Diakite who signed the statement, "the government's roadmap that was publicized on July 16 is just an action plan without any political and strategic vision, and without a precise timetable, which was only drafted due to the pressure the government was feeling from the public that was demanding action."

FDR declared that besides the government making no progress on the priority mission of its formation, it had also failed in some areas.

These failures, according to FDR, included the government's request to the international community to help it get the country out of the current crisis; the government was unable to protect the transitional president who was attacked on May 21 in his office, the harassment of the press and the abduction of journalists in order to suppress the freedom of expression.

The statement pointed out that the inaction of government in the face of these serious attacks to the constitutional rights of citizens and individual liberties had encouraged impunity and the persistence of these criminal acts.

Given the government's appeal to the international community to help Mali secure the transition and restructure the Malian armed forces to liberate the north, "FDR raised serious doubts on the capacity of the current prime minister and his government to successfully manage the transition," the statement said.
