Egyptian president decides powers of VP
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-09-21 08:50

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi decided Thursday the powers and duties of his deputy Mahmoud Mekki, official news agency MENA reported.

According to the decision, the vice president is entitled to issue decisions and consider and give opinions on drafts suggested by the concerned parties on behalf of the president, when a temporary obstacle prevents the president from proceeding with his work, such as being outside the country.

Morsi also assigned Mekki to lead the legislative reform project and ensure the judicial independence.

The decisions the vice president is allowed to issue do not include amending the constitution, dissolving the parliament, or sacking the government, the report added.

Mekki also has the right to supervise the democratic dialogue among the nation's sects and political movements.

Mekki, a former judge, was appointed as the vice president on Aug. 12.
