The government of Ghana has released 202 million Ghana cedis (106 million US dollars) to the country's electoral commission to conduct and supervise upcoming elections in December, a statement released here on Sunday has said.

The amount, according to the release signed by Abdul Hakim Ahmed, Media Liaison at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MOFEP) represented 91.5 percent of the total election related budget of 286 million cedis presented to government by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The EC earlier in April introduced a biometric voter register into the electoral system of the West African country where there has been a stable multiparty democratic practice for the past 19 years with two major transitions between the two major parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress ( NDC) in 2001 and 2009.

Part of the EC's requisition was to fund the biometric registration, acuisition of verification equipment and the exhibition of voters register, while the rest is for the conduct of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections in December.

"The Government is committed to its vow of ensuring that the Electoral Commission has adequate resources to conduct free, fair and transparent elections to the satisfaction of all stakeholders as a way of consolidating the democratic process," the statement assured.
