Egypt's case on constitutional assembly referred to constitutional court
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-23 18:12

Egypt's Administrative Court on Tuesday decided to refer the lawsuits against the Constitutional Assembly, tasked with writing the country's new constitution, to the Supreme Constitutional Court.

The court referred the case to the constitutional court to rule on the constitutionality of Act No. 79 of year 2012, which regulates the selection criteria for the assembly members.

Lawsuits filed against the assembly complain that the panel is dominated by Islamists and does not represent the entire Egyptian society.

Sounds of cheering and shouting were heard amid the plaintiffs and the defendants in the court after the head of the Administrative Courts, Fareed Tanagho, announced the verdict.

This is the second assembly that has been formed to write country's first post-Mubarak constitution. The first Constitutional Assembly was dissolved in April.
