Algeria on Saturday condemned an attack targeting a restaurant in Malian capital Bamako on Friday, calling it a "desperate terrorist attack" in the aftermath of the inter-Malian peace and reconciliation deal signed in Algiers last week.

"The murder of five innocent people would only be committed by terrorists and their allies whose criminal act has no other aim but to sow doubt among Malians," Algerian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdelaziz Benali-Cherifthe was quoted by official news agency APS as saying.

"This despicable act comes at a time when all the people of Mali have shown their commitment to dialogue and peace by engaging resolutely on the path of understanding and reconciliation," the spokesman said.

"In this circumstance, Algeria condemns this cowardly attack against innocent civilians, and sends condolences to the families of the victims and the Malian, French and Belgian governments," he said.

Two Europeans (a French and a Belgian) and three Malians were killed when an armed group targeted a restaurant in Bamako on Friday overnight.

Last week, Malian warrant factions, except the Tuareg rebel of Coordination of Movements of Azawad, reached a peace and reconciliation agreement to put an end to four years hostilities in the north of Mali.
