The 13-year-old daughter of U. S. President Barack Obama is safe in Mexico following a strong earthquake there, a White House spokesperson said on Tuesday.
"In light of today's earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger," said a spokeswoman for First Lady Michelle Obama.
Malia, Obama's elder daughter, is on spring break vacation with friends in Mexico.
Strong tremors were felt in Mexico City and prompted panicked residents to flee shaking buildings on Tuesday as a powerful 7.4- magnitude earthquake jolted Mexico's Pacific coast.
The quake, which struck at 12:02 p.m. local time (1802 GMT) Tuesday, had a depth of 20 km, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). So far there has been no report of casualties from the local authorities. |
