Prolific Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes died Tuesday at the age of 83 at a local hospital in Mexico City, the national capital of Mexico.

The president of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA) of Mexico, Consuelo Saizar, on Tuesday confirmed the death of Fuentes, without disclosing the exact cause of his death.

Fuentes's death has triggered an outpouring of sympathies across Mexico.

"I deeply regret the passing of our beloved and admire Carlos Fuentes, Mexican writer and universal. May he rest in peace, " Mexican President Felipe Calderon wrote in his Twitter account.

Fuentes, born in Panama on Nov. 11, 1928, who graduated in law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and Economics Institute of International Studies in Geneva, had written legions of literary works, including "The Air is Clear", "The Death of Artemio Cruz." He won the Cervantes Prize, the Spanish-speaking world's highest literary honor, in 1987.

According to Saizar, there will be a funeral, as wished by the writer's widow, Sylvia Lemus, and their two children, but the time of the funeral is not yet known at the moment.
