Along with the amendment of the party registration law, the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, made a decision on Nov. 18 to get the party re-registered as a legal political party and run for the upcoming by-election.

The process of NLD party's re-registration is underway since the end of the parliament's second session.

Among the economy-related laws approved are Law Revoking the Revenue Law, Law Amending the Commercial Tax Law, Law Amending the Income Tax Law, Law Revoking the 1964 Labor-Related Law and Microfinance Law.

Meanwhile, the Union Election Commission has announced April 1 for holding by-elections, formally making public the available number of parliamentary seats to be contested by political parties in the by-elections.

According to the commission, there are a total of 48 vacant parliamentary seats to be filled in the by-elections after most parliament members became government cabinet members in the last general election held on Nov. 7, 2010.

Of the 48 available parliamentary seats, scattered in constituencies in 10 regions or states for the by-elections, 40 are for the House of Representatives, 6 for the House of Nationalities and 2 for Region or State Parliament.

Of the 10 region or state constituencies, Mandalay will have 10 and Yangon 6 for the seats of the House of Representatives, while other constituencies each will have one or two seats for the House of Nationalities and for the Region or State Parliament.

Meanwhile, the NLD has made clear that it would run the by-elections by contesting in all constituencies available in the country.

In this regard, the NLD has also formed a 21-member Committee for Winning the Election, led by U Tin Oo, to prepare for starting canvassing work for the vote.

Nomination of NLD candidates to the by-elections is being expected.
