Deputy Prime Minister in charge of security Kowit Wattana reassured the public on Monday that they should not worry about terrorist attacks warned by some foreign countries and the government can take care of their safety.
Assigned by the cabinet to oversee the issue, the deputy PM said the Special Branch Police, the International Police and the Royal Thai Police had been working together to ensure security after a Swedish-Lebanese terrorist suspect was detained at Suvarnabhumi International Airport last Thursday for allegedly plotting terrorist attacks on Bangkok's attractions frequented by Western tourists.
The government believed that Atris Hussein, 47, is a member of the Lebanon-based Shiite group Hezbollah which was designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government. Following his arrest, the United States issued travel warnings to its citizens against traveling to Thailand, prompting 14 other nations to follow suit.
Meanwhile, Metropolitan Police Bureau commissioner Winai Thongsong said police are keeping a close watch around the clock on key locations and tourism areas in Bangkok, such as Khao San, Banglumpoo and Sukhumvit soi 22. |
