Myanmar govt,Kachin ethnic armed group to hold peace talks
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-18 10:38

Kachin Independence Organization ( KIO), a Myanmar ethnic armed group, will hold peace talks with the government at central level in the coming days in China's border town of Ruili, KIO said in a statement released Tuesday.

The talks will be a follow-up of a previous one initiated at state level at the same venue last November.

Peace will be gained through political dialogue, while armed clashes since August 2011 have forced displacement of about 60, 000 local people, the statement said.

In the last talks, U Aung Thaung, U Thein Zaw and Minister of Rail Transportation U Aung Min were at the head of the government delegation, while KIO delegation was led by its chairman U Zaung Hara.

Myanmar government's peace-making group at the central-level has vowed to make every effort to achieve peace with the country's ethnic armed groups.

"In making coordination and negotiation, there are no restrictions on both sides and measures are being taken in all possible ways to achieve success," said leaders of the central- level peace making group of the government.

"Steps are also being taken through the means of politics and roundtable discussions avoiding any military tactics," the government peace makers said, adding that "unity and peace and stability will completely be achieved among the national races."

Meanwhile, President U Thein Sein ordered the government forces on Dec. 10 to stop offensive against Kachin ethnic armed group and observed a unilateral ceasefire except for self-defense.

The KIO once returned to the government's legal fold in 1994 under a ceasefire agreement and was regarded as a peace group. However, along with four other similar peace groups, it refused to disarm and merge the government's border guard force. Armed clashes between the government forces and the KIO broke out in the Kachin state in early June near a power project site of Tarpein.

The fighting intensified in August and intermittent battles have been reported since then.
