Myanmar's exile TV to turn base to homeland
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-29 12:16

A foreign-based Myanmar exile TV -- the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) is planning to turn its base to homeland, local media Messenger News reported Sunday, quoting DVB Executive Director U Aye Chan Naing.

As a preliminary step, DVB reporters will seek permanent stay in Myanmar to take news domestically and then expand its branches gradually, while cutting its strength of staff based abroad.

The move aims to finally station domestically and catch the 2015 general election and the preparatory process may be expedited based on development in Myanmar in terms of media freedom, Aye Chan Naing said.

It is expected that following the increased opening of media sector in Myanmar, a number of foreign media such as CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera TV will enter the local TV market competitively.

The DVB was established as a media headquarters of Myanmar's exile government -- "the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB)", led by Dr. Sein Win in 1992 and became a free media organization as Media DVB Foundation in 2006 broadcasting from Oslo under Norway's media law.

Meanwhile, Norway has lifted trade and investment sanctions imposed on Myanmar, abolishing the policy which restricts private Norwegian companies to do business with and invest in Myanmar, according to Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store.

Norway made the move promptly following the release of hundreds of prisoners in Myanmar.

Norway is also considering to give special privileges to commodities exported by Myanmar following the lifting of economic sanctions on the country.

Jonas Gahr Store, who visited Myanmar earlier this week, met with Myanmar President U Thein Sein in Nay Pyi Taw and told speaker of the parliamentary House of Representatives U Shwe Mann about his satisfaction over Myanmar's democratization process.

The pair vowed to promote bilateral ties and cooperate between parliaments of the two countries.
