Top leader of Myanmar's opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi has been confirmed by the Union Election Commission as one of the eligible candidates fielded by the party to contest the by-elections on April 1, local media reported Tuesday.
Along the way to the local election commission office, Aung San Suu Kyi received a rousing welcome by a large human wave.
She is to run in Yangon region's Kawmu township constituency for a seat of the House of Representatives, which is known as a poor and under-developed region severely hit by cyclone Nargis in May 2008.
The NLD has nominated a total of 48 candidates to contest 48 vacant seats in the upcoming parliamentary by-elections, including 40 seats of the House of Representatives, 6 seats of the House of Nationalities and 2 seats of region or state parliament.
Aung San Suu Kyi is to contest against Dr. U Soe Min, a candidate of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, in Kawmu township constituency.
A total of 19 political parties including 11 old and 8 newly- registered parties have fielded candidates in the coming by- election, according to local media. |
