Thais worried Constitution amendment may cause conflicts: poll
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-26 10:35

A large number of Thais or 38.88 percent of poll respondents said they were afraid the government's attempt to amend 2007 Constitution may lead to conflicts among different political camps, according to the Suan Dusit Poll released on Sunday.

The poll was conducted on February 23-24 asking over 700 people across the country about the Feb. 25 parliamentary debate on the constitution amendment.

Around 38.88 percent of the respondents said that they are worried about an upcoming conflict and violence between the proponents and the opponents of the amendment plan.

However, about 22.5 percent expressed hopes that the charter amendment will benefit the majority of the public more than any individual, while 15.61 percent were ready to see the amendment take place.

When asked if the constitution amendment should take place, about 48.11 percent said they were not sure due to the lack of information, while 27.57 percent disagreed with the move and 24.32 percent were supportive of the rewrite.

The joint parliamentary session of House of Representatives and Senate late on Friday voted in support of three bills seeking to amend the constitution as the government's version would be the main draft for consideration by the vetting committee.

All three drafts proposed by the cabinet, the ruling Pheu Thai Party and the coalition Chartthai Pattana Party focus on the amendment of only Section 291 regarding the set-up of a Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA), but with differing numbers of members and different selection processes.

After the vote, a 45-member vetting committee was appointed to prepare for the next readings of the amendment bills. The panel consists of 10 senators and 35 lawmakers and would complete its work within 30 days after next Wednesday.
