Three soldiers were injured as an improvised explosive device (IED) blew up in the southernmost province of Narathiwat's Bacho district Tuesday afternoon while they were heading to downtown.
The explosion left a big hole of about one meter in depth and one meter in diameter at the scene. The police said the IED was stuffed in a 20-kg extinguisher cylinder and detonated by wire.
Six soldiers were traveling to Narathiwat's Muang district on a 6-wheel truck when they were assaulted by a unknown number of assailants.
All three wounded soldiers were taken to a hospital.
The four southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Satun and Yala are the only majority Muslim provinces in predominantly Buddhist Thailand. The region has seen escalating violence since January 2004, which has so far claimed more than 5,200 lives. |
