SP wins legislative elections in Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state

The Samajwadi Party (SP) or Socialist Party has won the legislative elections in Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state, by winning 34 percent of the votes, ousting incumbent BSP party of chief minister Mayawati, said local TV channels Saturday.

The SP has won 183 seats out of 403 total seats of the state assembly of Uttar Pradesh, according to a projection by Star News- AC Nielsen. It was followed by BSP with 83 seats, BJP with 71 seats and Congress with 62 seats, according to Times Now channel.

The CNN-IBN News Channel said quoting a projection that the BSP won 24 percent of the vote after 34 percent of SP. The Congress won 12 percent, BJP 14 percent.

It is not clear whether the SP will tie up with the Congress to form an absolute majority in the local assembly.

SP is a powerful regional political party in India based in Uttar Pradesh. It was founded on Oct. 4, 1992 and describes itself as a democratic socialist party and is mainly representing the interests of a caste grouping called Other Backward Classes.

The Samajwadi Party is led by a former wrestler Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and former defense minister of India.
