India's national ruling party Congress moved ahead by winning more seats in four out of five states in local legislative elections held last month, but lost the resort state Goa to the opposition BJP, said official outcome of the vote counting Tuesday.

The Congress replaced BJP by becoming the third largest party in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, by winning 50 seats out of 403 in the local assembly, said the tally result quoted by local TV channels.

The Congress also had a draw with BJP in the northern state Uttarakhand, a strong hold of the opposition by winning 30 seats while the BJP maintained 30 seats in the local assembly.

In the northeast state Manipur, the Congress maintained its monopoly of the local assembly with 25 seats, and edged up with 55 seats in the assembly in the northern state of Punjab, close to 59 maintained by the incumbent SAD alliance.

In Goa, Congress gained only five seats while the BJP carried the former Portuguese enclave with 16 seats.
