Individuals living alone are expected to be the most common household type in South Korea this year due to the rapid breakup of nuclear families, a government report showed Thursday.
In 2012, 25.3% of South Korean households are predicted to consist of one person, according to the report by Statistics Korea.
Single-person households were the second most common type of household in the country in 2010, following after two-member households.
Two-person homes are expected to account for 25.2% of households in 2012, while those with three people stand at 21.3%, the report said.
The statistical agency attributed the growth in one-person households to extension in life expectancy, the rising number of senior citizens living alone, and the country's low birth rate.
It said this trend will continue unchanged up till 2035 when single-person households will make up 34.3% of the total. |
