Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-15 09:28
Indian policemen Monday fired warning shots in a University campus in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The incident took place inside University of Kashmir campus in Srinagar city, after a cricket ball landed in the garden of Vice Chancellor's secretariat.

Eyewitness said a cricket ball landed inside the lodge of the Vice-Chancellor during a match of Kashmir Premier League (KPL). However, a policeman deployed for the security of the Vice Chancellor rebuked him for trespassing into restricted area.

The police action triggered protests in the campus.

"The policemen came out into the ground and started beating up the players and in the melee one of the policemen opened fire," said a student. "Even the umpire Danish Ahmad was severely beaten up by the cops."

Meanwhile, top police officials rushed to the spot and assured the players of strict action against the cops involved.

The KPL cricket tournament is being organised by Indian army to engage Kashmiri youth in sports activities.

An Indian army spokesman said there was some "misunderstanding" and the issue "has been resolved amicably".
