India's premier probe agency raids former chief minister of southern state

India's premier probe agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Wednesday raided the residences of former chief minister of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled southern state of Karnataka for his alleged role in illegal mining, sources said.

"CBI sleuths raided B.S. Yeddyurappa's residence in Dollar's colony, an upmarket area in state capital Bangalore, and in Shimoga district, in connection with his involvement in illegal mining and business transactions. The agency Tuesday charged the former chief minister, his two sons and his son-in-law in this connection," the sources said.

The probe agency also raided the offices of South West Mining Company in Bellary district. The company allegedly paid a whopping amount of money to Yeddyurappa's family-run concerns in lieu of sanction of mining licences, they added.

The raids came in the wake of the CBI registering a case against Yeddyurappa and others involved following a directive from the country's Supreme Court in this connection. The CBI has been asked to submit its preliminary report by Aug. 3.

Yeddyurappa, who was compelled to resign as chief minister last year after the Lokayukta (Ombudsman) indicted him on illegal mining.

He also faces an uncertain future as the BJP has so far been reluctant to reinstate him as the state chief minister despite his pressure tactics to destabilise the government.
