Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-17 11:58
More than 5,000 soldiers have been deployed in Thailand's Deep South to ensure safety of teachers and students during the first semester of the new school year, the army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said Wednesday.

Over 5,000 soldiers were dispatched to provide security at about 400 schools in the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat to escort education workers and students while travelling from their homes to schools.

The army chief elaborated further that about 10 soldiers were deployed to protect teachers and students for each trip.

Since the resurgence of insurgency in January 2004, over 11,000 violent incidents have happened in the three southern border provinces which were once part of independent sultanate of Pattani. In total, over 5,200 people were killed and nearly 8,000 wounded.
