Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-25 09:36

Azerbaijan's Border Guard along with State Customs Service foiled a drug smuggling attempt to Azerbaijan from Iran, Border Guard press service told media on Tuesday.

According to the press service, three Iranians violated the Azeri maritime border and were detained on June 13 in the Caspian sea near Kaledehne village of Astara region some 330 km from Baku.

The Iranian smugglers refused to stop their boat and threw the cargo into the sea, trying to escape from the scene by boat.

The boat was detained by the border patrol agents 2.2 miles from the coast. Using special equipment, State Border Guard divers found and lifted from the boat's bottom 10 kg of hashish.

Azerbaijan shares a 661-km border with Iran, which is considered by Azerbaijanis one of the major drug producing countries and trafficking routes leading from Afghanistan.
