Two civilians were killed and one wounded in two separate armed attacks Friday morning in Thailand's restive southern province of Pattani, local media reported.

Rosa Dorloh, 18, and his wife, Waesoh, also 18, were traveling on a motorcycle to the Pattani hospital to visit their son. In the Pattani-Khok Pho road, gunmen on a pickup truck fired at them with M16 assault rifles.

Rosa took one bullet in his left leg, while his wife was shot twice in her torso. They fell from the motorbike on the spot and were taken to Pattani hospital by nearby villagers. Waesoh was pronounced dead on arrival, the Bangkok Post online reported.

The second attack took place in Muang district and the victim was identified as Arong Jehmasae, 66.

Arong was walking to the village mosque for prayer when gunmen hiding in the roadside forest opened fired on him with AK47 assault rifles, the report cited witnesses as saying.

He took two bullets, in his head and torso, and died on the spot.

More than 5,000 people have been killed and over 8,400 hurt in the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat since violence erupted in January 2004, according to Deep South Watch -- an agency that monitors the conflict in the southernmost provinces.
