Indian President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee was Saturday elected to the Indian parliament from India's eastern state of West Bengal.
He had contested on a Congress party ticket for the by-election held on October 10 as the Jangipur parliamentary seat fell vacant since his father, who held that seat, became president of India. Jangipur is 236 km from the state capital here.
He defeated his nearest rival Muzaffar Hussain of Communist Party of India (Marxist) by a margin of 2,536 votes. Abhijit's margin has considerably come down compared to his father who had won with a massive margin of more than 180,000 votes in the 2009 general elections in India. |
