Indian rape victim fighting for her life at Singapore hospital
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-12-29 15:05

A 23-year-old medical student, who was gangraped by six men on a moving bus in the Indian capital last week, is reportedly "fighting for her life" and remains on life support at a Singapore hospital where she was flown to after her condition worsened at a government hospital.

"The patient is currently struggling against the odds, and fighting for her life," Kelvin Loh, the chief executive officer of Mount Elizabeth Hospital where the victim is currently being treated, said in a statement issued to the media.

He added, "our medical team's investigations upon her arrival at the hospital yesterday (Thursday) showed that in addition to her prior cardiac arrest, she also had infection of her lungs and abdomen, as well as significant brain injury."

The Indian government Wednesday night flew the victim to Singapore in an air ambulance after her condition at a government hospital in the national capital worsened though she underwent at least three operations to contain spreading infections in her body.

The Delhi University student was gangraped on Dec. 16 and subsequently beaten up by the six accused, along with her boyfriend, on a moving bus in the Indian capital, before being thrown off the vehicle. The duo had boarded the bus after watching a movie at a multiplex in the south of the city.

All the six accused have been arrested and are currently in judicial custody awaiting trial.

The gangrape sparked massive public protests across the country and violent clashes in the Indian capital during the weekend, which left one policeman dead and more than 100 protesters injured.

Apart from announcing a slew of measure intended to make the city safer for women, the Indian government has also ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident and suspended two senior police officials for their failure to prevent the gangrape.
