Pakistani troops kill 2 Indian soldiers near LoC in Kashmir
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2013-01-08 21:30

Two Indian soldiers were killed Tuesday along the Line-of-Control (LoC) by Pakistani troops, official sources said.

The incident took place along the LoC in Mankote-Mendhar belt of frontier Poonch district, around 185 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Two Indian army troopers were killed in Mendhar today," said an official source. "There are reports that Pakistani troopers sneaked inside Indian-controlled part and killed the Indian troopers."

Unconfirmed reports said the Pakistani troops have also snatched weapons of the slain Indian soldiers.

On Sunday, Pakistan claimed that Indian army had entered into their territory in Haji Pir district in Uri around 110 km northwest of Srinagar city and attacked their post killing one Pakistani soldier. The claim, however, was rejected by Indian army saying an exchange of fire took place between the two sides.

LoC is a de facto border dividing Kashmir into Indian and Pakistani-controlled areas.

New Delhi and Islamabad in 2003 agreed on a ceasefire along the International Border and LoC in Kashmir. Though some violations have been reported on both sides, the ceasefire remains in effect.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region situated between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
