Pakistan attack on troops in Kashmir "counterproductive" to improving ties: Indian FM
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2013-01-09 12:10

India Wednesday called the alleged attack upon an Indian patrol party by Pakistani troops on Tuesday at the Line-of-Control (LoC) in Kashmir as " counterproductive" to the efforts being made by the two sides to improve relations.

Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told local TV channel Times Now that the way two Indian soldiers were killed by Pakistani troops Tuesday was "extremely depressing".

Local media reports said one of the two Indian soldiers killed on Tuesday was beheaded.

Khurshid said the foreign ministry is in touch with the defense ministry over how to respond to the attack and will make a formal statement later Wednesday.

He said earlier described as "absolutely unacceptable" and " inhuman" the Pakistani army's violation of the LoC ceasefire and killing two Indian soldiers.

While hinting that the attack was aimed at derailing the process of improving relations between the two countries, the foreign minister said India would not "unnecessarily play fire" over the issue and would give a "proportionate response", according to local TV channel NDTV.

India and Pakisan have resumed comprehensive dialogue to improve relations which were interrupted by the Mumbai terrorist attacks in November 2008.

India said Tuesday Pakistani regular troops crossed the LoC in Kashmir's Poonch district and killed two Indian soldiers, in apparent retaliation to the death of a Pakistani soldier in an alleged Indian attack on Sunday along the LoC in Kashmir's Uri district.
