India warns border clashes in Kashmir may hit economic ties with Pakistan
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2013-01-17 09:00

India Wednesday warned Pakistan that the recent cross-border clash in the disputed territory of Kashmir could affect the economic ties between the two neighboring countries.

"The current environment between the two countries was not favorable for enhancing economic ties," Indian Commerce Minister Anand Sharma told the media.

He added: "Economic engagement can be enhanced in an environment of peace and stability. And anything which undermines that environment is not conducive."

The Minister's statement gave credence to recent speculation that India is unlikely to allow Pakistani Commerce Minister to attend the Global Business Meet in the city of Agra in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh slated for January 27.

Local TV channels reported, quoting sources, that the Indo- Pakistan Commerce Ministers' meet during the event has been ruled out in the wake of the recent clashes between the Indian Army and Pakistani Army, in which both sides lost two soldiers each, and accused each other of aggression.
