Spanish unions announce nationwide protests against labor reforms
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-12 16:10

Spain's labor unions on Saturday announced to organize a string of demonstrations across the country on February 19 against the labor reforms approved by the government of Mariano Rajoy Friday.

The unions added that, on February 29, protesters will also participate in a 'day of European action' organized by the Confederation of European Unions.

The reforms considerably lower the cost of sacking workers: reducing compensation from 45 days salary for each year worked down to 33 days, if the worker loses their job under normal circumstances.

However, if a company can show its income has fallen for nine consecutive months, workers will receive just 20 days salary per year spent at that company.

Spanish Vice-President, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria and Employment Minister, Fatima Banez on Friday called the reforms as 'historic', but the leaders of Spain's main labor unions, UGT and CC.OO (Comisiones Obreras) rejected the plan, which came into effect Saturday.

"It is a radical reform aimed at dismantling workers rights," said CC.OO leader Ignacio Fernandez Toxo, who said the law would lead to the destruction of jobs and more conflict between workers and employers.

Meanwhile UGT (Union General de Trabajadores) GeneralSecretary, Candido Mendez, described the reforms as "useless and unbalanced", insisting they would lead to further unemployment in the short term and endanger working conditions in the longer term. He also warned that the reforms established a trend that would eventually lead to just 20 days compensation for people losing their jobs.

"The rich will become richer and the poor will get poorer," he warned.

The unions will meet Employment Minister, Banez on Monday in hopes of finding solutions that are 'not traumatic' and will not harm job security.
