Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-01 19:37

The Czech Republic will hold its first direct presidential election on Jan. 11-12, 2013, Senate Chairman Milan Stech announced Monday.

An absolute majority of votes is needed in the first round of the election and the two candidates with the highest number of votes can enter the second round. Unless no candidate is elected in the first round, a new president will be elected two weeks later.

The presidential candidates will have five weeks to officially submit their candidatures before the November 6 deadline. The candidates who have not been proposed by 10 senators or 20 members of the Chamber of Deputies must collect 50,000 citizens' signatures under the election law.

According to available information, 25 bidders have shown interest in the election campaign, but only six of them have met the conditions.

The country's president was chosen previously by the parliament.
