French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault denounced far-right activists' occupation of a new mosque in Poitier, western France, blaming them for provocating hatred, local media reported Saturday.
"I firmly condemn this provocation which reveals unacceptable religious hatred," the prime minister said on the sideline of his official visit to Manila.
Quoted by radio Europe1, Ayrault added that the far-right activists' storming of the new French mosque was "an aggression against the Republic (of France) and its values."
About 70 French far-right activists occupied the construction site of a new mosque in suburb of Poitier on Saturday.
Local media said in their earlier reports that the protestors, from a far-right extremist group known as "Generation Identity," climbed onto the building's roof at dawn and displayed a banner marked with their group's name.
They dispersed after police arrived. But three members were detained to face accusations of incitement of racial hatred.
Interior Minister Manuel Valls also condemned the storming action, describing it as "hateful and inadmissible provocation." |
