French conservative party leadership dispute remains unsolved
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-11-26 08:18

French former prime minister Francois Fillon on Sunday declared to seek judicial solutions after the failure of a mediation for voting dispute over the presidency of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) with his rival Jean-Francois Cope.

In his statement, Fillon said Cope has rejected the conservative party's heavyweight Alain Juppe's mediation proposals.

"Jean-Francois Cope takes sole responsibility for a failure that affects our party and undermines the image of the political activity," he said.

Fillon's remarks came after the mediator, former foreign minister Juppe, to met Sunday with Fillon and secretary general of the French main opposition party UMP Cope, aiming to calm down the leadership dispute between the two big bowls over the results of the Nov. 18 voting for the next party president.

Last Monday, the center-right party officially confirmed Cope as the winner in the election, edging Fillon by 98 votes.

But Fillon camp complained that ballots in the overseas territories were not counted, otherwise the result would be reversed.

As the chaotic dispute was escalating when both contenders claiming victory and alleging fraud, party founder Juppe worked to medicate a solution. However, after a 45-minute talk, Juppe admitted in a statement failed to save the situation, saying his mission has "finished".

"Anxious to break the deadlock in which Jean-Francois Cope successive power grabs have plunged our party, I will take justice action to restore the truth of the results and give the voice back to (party) militants," Fillon stressed.

For his part, Cope told a press briefing that he would wait until the electorial appeals commission of the UMP proclaims the winner of the election on Nov. 18 voting, and only then "the time comes to political mediation."
